Gravity Cats

I served as the sole designer, creating all levels and mechanics using GDevelop, a visual scripting software. The game includes six levels, with challenging obstacles and secrets designed to reward mastery.

Communication is Key

Design Goals

Learning Through Failure
Each level challenges players to learn and adapt through trial and error, fostering a sense of progression.

Simple Yet Masterable Controls
Gravity Cats uses a single-button mechanic to flip gravity. This simplicity allows new players to jump in easily while providing depth for those who seek mastery.

Rewarding Exploration
Hidden collectibles and secret endings encourage players to explore every corner of the game.

Reference Games

These inspirations helped shape the mechanics and feel of Gravity Cats:

  • Mario: Curated platformer levels with multiple secrets.

  • Dark Souls: Learning from failure and mastering a steep difficulty curve.

  • Flappy Bird: Rhythmic one-button controls.

  • VVVVV: Gravity-flipping precision platformer.

Transferrable Skills For Combat Design

While primarily a platformer, Gravity Cats demonstrates my ability to:

  • Create challenges with a balanced difficulty curve.

  • Design systems that reward mastery and exploration.

  • Develop player progression through adaptive problem-solving.

These skills align closely with designing engaging and strategic combat encounters.
